Eleanor Worthington Prize - EXHIBITION

Frances is delighted to confirm that her work is part of the exhibition in Urbio University starting on the 10th of AUGUST 2024.

Having visited Urbino at Easter in 2018, Frances was entranced by this small hill town, embued with history and culture.

For the competition, Frances explored the theme of autonomy, engaging with the proposition that swimming can be a great leveller. Whatever the state of mind or body, engagement with water is immersive and offers relief rarely achieved on land. The painting shows an observer gazing down, yearning to take part.

The work takes its title from Buzzcocks, Autonomy.

PRIZE WINNER

The 2023 Eleanor Worthington Prize

Frances was delighted to be awarded third prize, in this year's Eleanor Worthington competition.

The prize is in its tenth year, open to the UK, Ireland and Italy and arranged by the Associazione Premio Eleanor Worthington-ODV, a non-profit organisation based in Urbino, Italy.

Having visited Urbino at Easter in 2018, Frances was entranced by this small hill town, with so much history and culture, finding it vibrant and with lovely energy. She was enthusiastic to return as an artist.

For the competition, Frances explored the theme of autonomy, engaging with the proposition that swimming can be a great leveller. Whatever the state of mind or body, engagement with water is immersive and offers relief rarely achieved on land. The painting shows an observer gazing down, yearning to take part, to take control. The work takes its title from Buzzcocks, Autonomy.

"I was overwhelmed when I watched   The Great British Sewing Bee"

The Full Story

Leeds Arts University posted an opportunity for students to paint a large canvas last year. For Frances, it was a great way to kick-start the semester. That it might appear in the tv programme made it an exceptional experience.

Artists were told the week before the program that their work may feature in Series 9: Episode 5. In the spoiler, there was excitement to see Lucy Walker's beautiful painting. Nothing prepared Frances for Asmaa's astonishing creativity.

"I am so lucky that she chose my painting".

The blouse Asmaa designed was glorious. It was a completely transformative garment and astounding. Frances contacted Asmaa to thank her.

Frances's journey as a professional artist began by re-assessing her life following a breast cancer diagnosis. Asmaa is a consultant breast surgeon, which adds a layer of poignancy for her. "Asmaa's creativity and ability to change people's lives, like mine every day, leaves me awestruck. It has left me very emotional since watching the programme".
